A Small Character driving Big Conversations in sustainable hospitality

Sometimes the most powerful messages come from the simplest ideas...
That is certainly true of Pasha the Pillowcase, the now two-year-old sustainability ambassador created to raise awareness of textile use, reuse and longevity across the hospitality and commercial laundry sector.
The idea was developed by the Textile Services Association, as part of their wider work on the Infinite Textiles Scheme, in association with UKHospitality and the UK Housekeeping Association, to support better linen management, reduce textile waste and encourage more sustainable practices across the hospitality supply chain.
Pasha was launched at the TSA Autumn Conference in 2023 in a session led by Rona Tait from TDS Commercial and Nigel Graham from Bourne Leisure to encourage knowledge-sharing and practical change through collaboration across our industry.
The journey of a pillowcase
Pasha the Pillowcase tells the story of a single piece of hospitality linen, from cotton field to hotel bedroom, revealing the true environmental cost behind every item. Cotton production alone requires tens of thousands of litres of water, along with energy, transport and manufacturing, before the linen even reaches a commercial laundry.
Pasha helps visualise this journey in a way that is engaging and accessible. Using simple, visually clear graphics paired with a voiceover, the film is designed to be fully accessible, allowing every member of staff to engage with and understand the concepts, with an edition available for laundries as well as hotels.
The film highlights how correct storage, stock rotation and using linen only for its intended purpose can dramatically extend textile lifespan, with a pillowcase capable of up to 200 washes when properly cared for.
Reducing linen loss and misuse not only cuts operational costs for hotels and laundries, but also lowers carbon emissions and water consumption. It also introduces textile recycling through the Infinite Textiles scheme, showing how a more circular approach supports sustainability across the hospitality laundry supply chain.
Why linen management matters more than ever
Sustainability is a present day priority for hotels, spas, sports clubs and hospitality venues across the UK. Guests are increasingly interested in the environmental credentials of the businesses they engage with, and operators are balancing this with the need to maintain exceptional service standards and manage rising costs.
This is where effective hospitality linen management plays a crucial role.
Maximising textile lifespan helps to:
Reduce replacement purchasing and operational spend
Lower water and energy consumption across the supply chain
Minimise waste and support circular textile solutions
Improve stock availability and consistency of service
It is a practical measurable way to support both commercial performance and sustainability goals.
Driving circular-economies through the Infinite Textiles Scheme
The TSA’s Infinite Textiles Scheme is a sector-wide programme, focused on extending textile lifespan, improving use and reuse of textiles and creating dedicated end-of-life recycling routes.
Through this scheme, laundries and hospitality partners gain access to structured guidance and training, accreditation that covers sorting and logistics to end-of-life processing, while providing documented evidence of compliance with environmental standards and circular-economy best practice.
How TDS Commercial supports best practice
At TDS Commercial, we work closely with our clients to provide guidance that helps them protect their linen investment and meet their own sustainability commitments.
This includes:
Transparent communication and regular reviews
Monitoring trends and identifying opportunities for improvement
Supporting efficient stock management
Investing in technologies that reduce environmental impact
As supported by our own sustainability initiatives, we believe every stage of the textile lifecycle should be as efficient and responsible as possible. By combining high operational standards with a collaborative approach, we help clients achieve sustainability and long-term value.
Looking ahead: the future of sustainable textile services
Pasha the Pillowcase endearingly shows us what can be achieved when the entire supply chain works together.
Hospitality is a fast-paced, high-pressure environment where textiles move constantly between departments and locations. As the industry continues to evolve, commercial laundry sustainability will play an increasingly central role in helping hospitality businesses meet their environmental targets while maintaining the standards their guests expect.
Two years on, Pasha the Pillowcase remains a relevant and positive symbol of this progress. Strong partnerships, shared knowledge and developing circular solutions are the keys to building a more sustainable and resilient future for our industry.
